Can any home have an electric vehicle charger installed?
Whilst many homes are suitable for the installation of electric vehicle charging equipment, some are not so its important to find out what is needed. Every electrical installation is different and there are certain requirements that need to be met before electric vehicle charging equipment can be installed.
• Access requirements
• Electrical System Capability
• Suitability of Safety Earthing
• Best Cable Route
Access Requirements
In every home there are challenges that need to be overcome. Furniture, personal items, and other obstacles can mean that access is difficult for work to be carried out.
Off street parking such as a driveway or garage is vital to ensuring that the electric vehicle charging equipment can be safely installed in accordance with all regulations.
In many cases, a site visit is necessary in order to establish what is required in each installation but don’t worry, I have you covered. I specialise in the installation of vehicle charging equipment and am able to overcome all but the trickiest situations.
Electrical System Capability
Not everybody lives in a new-build property with an electrical system that is bang up to date. When electrical work is carried out, the wiring regulations require that the current electrical system is up to the job.
The mains incoming supply in older properties can often be insufficient in order to power equipment. The vehicle charging equipment does have the capability to ‘throttle back’ the power when required to ensure that the incoming supply is not at risk of overloading but this is one of the things I will check.
Electricity suppliers are often able to upgrade their equipment to enable hassle free installation and as much power as possible to charge your vehicle.
Suitability of Safety Earthing
Under the wiring regulations I am required to ensure that the earthing at the property is safe and will take away electrical faults when they occur. This includes checking the safety electrical connections to metal pipework in the property.
In modern properties there are less likely to be issues with mains electrical supply or earthing as there may be in older properties. If there are any issues that need rectifying, I will inform you.
Best Cable Route
Each property presents its own challenges to new electrical installation work. Where a consumer unit or fuse box is situated in the middle of the property, the installation of your new vehicle charging equipment may be more difficult, time consuming and costly than if your consumer unit was situated in a more accessible location.
During a site visit, I will establish what is required and let you know the costs.
What do you need from me?
When the installation takes place, the power supply to your homes electrics will need to be turned off for a portion of the day which may result in some inconvenience. I would always recommend that you charge mobile devices, set up a Wi-Fi hotspot for the day of the works and if necessary, ensure that a thermos flask of tea or coffee is available in case a kettle cannot be boiled.
I will inform you of any obstacles that need to be moved such as furniture prior to my arrival to ensure that the installation can be carried out safely and in a timely manner.
Will cables be on display?
Every effort is made to conceal cables where possible and the required cable route will be discussed with you to ensure that there are no surprises. Should you have any further questions then check out my FAQ for vehicle chargers.
