An Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR for short, is the thorough testing and inspection of the electrical installation of your property.
It is performed at regular intervals to ensure the safety of your wiring. As most of a property’s wiring is hidden from view it can be easy to miss the signs of wear and the resultant danger. An EICR is designed to highlight these potential issues before they become dangerous. PG Electrics provide Electrical Installation Condition Reports to homeowners and landlords in Abergavenny to help keep you and your property safe.
How often should I have an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)?
For landlords, it is a legal requirement to have an EICR every 5 years. An up to date EICR must be in place before any change of tenancy takes place. The EICR must be performed by a registered, competent person – a qualified electrician. PG Electrics are NICEIC registered, qualified electricians providing electrical testing services, including EICR, in Abergavenny. It is recommended that homeowners have an EICR inspection once every 10 years, or sooner if concerned. It is also advisable to have an EICR if you are moving into a new home or planning major renovations. This helps to ensure there are no problems, and expensive faults, for you to discover later.
I’m a Homeowner -do I really need an EICR?
There are some signs that you, the homeowner, can easily see if you are unsure if your electrical equipment would benefit from an electrician’s expert opinion. Each of these would indicate that your electrics are older and that an EICR would be advisable to ensure your safety.
- A Fuse Box with cast iron switches, a wooden back or a mixture of boxes.
- Braided flex on ceiling fixtures.
- Sockets mounted into skirting boards.
- Fixed cables with black rubber, lead or fabric coating.
- Round Pin sockets and light switches.
- Brown or black switches.
An EICR would also be advised if you are noticing any intermittent faults with your electrics. Flickering lights, sockets not working, or your fuse box tripping can all indicate problems in your circuitry. To be safe, it is best to consult a qualified electrician. Our experienced electricians at PG Electrics are always happy to offer our qualified advice to the people of Abergavenny. If in doubt, please call.
What will an EICR tell me?
The EICR of your Abergavenny property will tell you about the safety and condition of your electrical system. It will let you know if there are any hazards present or areas requiring improvement. During the EICR inspection the electrician will make a number of observations and will assign each one a code.
- Code C1 means immediate action is required as there is danger present. These may need remedying before the electrician leaves your property.
- Code C2 means Urgent action required with potential danger to life. Work will need to be completed within a specified time frame.
- Code C3 means improvement recommended and gives you the chance act upon a concern that may develop into a more serious fault later.
Your electrician can provide you with advice and an estimate for any works necessary alongside your copy of the EICR.
